The focal point of the Arboretum is Coe Hall, a magnificent
Tudor-Revival Mansion from the Gold Coast era. Its architecture
reflects the style popular during the reign of Queen Elizabeth
I. Tours are available for both individuals and groups.
Among
the many special features at Planting Fields is the Hay Barn,
recently converted to an air-conditioned facility with seating
for up to 500 people. The Hay Barn schedules a full calendar
of concerts, theatrical performances, art exhibits, crafts
fairs, and special events throughout the year. Call for a
calendar.
The
Arboretum contains an incredible variety of indoor and outdoor
plantings including magnificent trees, more than 600 different
kinds of azaleas, rhododendrons and collections of many other
species, as well as the unique Synoptic Garden, with more
than 400 species of flowering shrubs and small trees covering
more than five acres, alphabetically arranged to botanical
name.
The
greenhouses include collections of orchids, cacti, begonias
and ferns, as well as showy seasonal displays. As a Nature
Center and an educational facility, the Arboretum offers an
extensive program of short courses for children and adults
in spring and fall covering ecology, horticulture, and plant-related
crafts. Educational exhibits are displayed in the Arboretum
Center. Planting Fields also features an herbarium of over
10,000 pressed specimens for study and identification.
